Frontier
College is a national, non-profit literacy organization founded in 1899. We
work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their
literacy skills. We work with a variety of community-based organizations to deliver
volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is
accredited under the Imagine Canada
Standards program.
Frontier College
has partnered with Central Ontario Building Trades to support youth
participants of the Hammer Heads program.
Hammer Heads is a 12-week pre-apprenticeship training program that
facilitates careers for under-resourced youth across Toronto who face
significant barriers to education and employment.
We are currently seeking a candidate who will support youth in completing
their Grade 12 Math, Physics, or English credits, or their GED. The Instructor Coordinator, will administer literacy/academic assessments,
provide in-class academic instruction, and match tutor volunteers with youth to
supplement in-class instruction. They will also maintain systems of tracking
and reporting for volunteers and learners, and lead the management of
stakeholder relationships.
We are
currently seeking a full-time Instructor Coordinator to work within the Hammer
Heads Program at Yonge and St. Clair.
Overall
Accountability
The Instructor Coordinator, Hammer Heads, is a member of the Frontier
College Toronto Adult Programs team and will work at Yonge and St. Clair. Training
and mentorship will be provided by the manager and members of the team to
support success in the role. The successful candidate will report to the Toronto
Regional Manager.
Major
Duties and Responsibilities
·
Monitor and record the academic progress and
individualized needs of over 30 learners
·
Create and maintain efficient organization and
tracking systems for learner and volunteer file management, course completion,
funder communication, and program outcomes and statistics
·
Demonstrate an understanding of program
requirements and outcomes when prioritizing funder and learner needs and
expectations
·
Anticipate and mitigate logistical challenges in
order to reduce the impact on program operations
·
Design and deliver academic upgrading instruction
for math, science, and other foundational academic areas as needed
·
Develop
and clearly communicate expectations that reflect the program priorities
·
Review and assess high school transcripts to verify
the completion of prerequisites for supplementary courses or high school
equivalency
·
Ensure training resources and supports reflect the
academic and practical applications of the program and the participants future employment in
a trades apprenticeship
·
Provide
one-to-one and small group tutoring to learners in the Hammer Heads program
·
Recruit,
train, supervise, and support tutor volunteers
·
Match learners with tutors and monitor learner
progress through ongoing assessment
·
Maintain
and strengthen relationships with our network of community partners
Skills and
Attributes
·
Ability to work a flexible schedule – evening work will be required
·
Teaching degree or adult education certification; experience
in high school level math and physics (Grade 10-12)
·
Extensive experience working with under-resourced
youth aged 16 to 26
·
Knowledge of literacy, community development and
adult education principles
·
Energetic, resourceful, tolerant of ambiguity and
flexible to change
·
Able to think critically, solve problems, and
manage a complexity of details
·
Self-directed and able to work independently or as
part of a team
·
Experience facilitating programs in non-formal
education settings
·
Excellent spoken and written communication
·
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Internet, and Email
·
Comfortable working in rapidly changing environments,
with the ability to manage stress when the rapid change occurs
·
Ability to demonstrate leadership and assertiveness
in challenging learning situations through the effective use of empathy and
conflict resolution

Positive learning attitude

Familiar with Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships
including working culture and entrance requirements to local unions
